If you've been in this business long enough, you've seen it happen. The paver runs through, the mat looks fine from the cab, but when you check it with a straightedge? Waves. Bumps. A surface that's going to fail the inspection before the roller even finishes.
Nine times out of ten, the problem is in the leveling system.
The asphalt paver leveling system is what keeps your mat flat, smooth, and within spec. It's the brain behind the screed's up-and-down movements. If it's working right, you barely notice it. If it's not, you'll know within the first few feet of paving.
Today, we're going to talk about what makes up this system, which parts give you the most trouble, and what you should have on your shelf so you don't get caught out.
Let's keep this simple.
The paver has a screed that floats. The grade control system tells that screed when to go up and when to go down based on what the machine is running over. If the paver hits a bump, the leveling system should pull the screed up a bit to keep the mat flat. If it hits a dip, it pushes the screed down.
Without it, your mat follows every rise and fall in the subgrade. That's not paving. That's just copying bad ground.
Let's go through the paver leveling system parts one by one.
These are the most recognizable parts. They hang off the sides of the paver on long arms and run along a reference — either a stringline, a ski, or the existing ground.
What they do:
They measure the height of the paver relative to the reference. When the paver goes up or down, the sensor picks up the change and sends a signal.
Two common types:
Contact sensors — drag along a wire or ski. Old-school, but reliable.
Non-contact sensors — use ultrasonic or laser. More expensive, but no physical wear.
What fails:
The arms bend. The cables break. The sensor itself gets knocked out of calibration.
These sit inside the paver or on the screed and measure the cross slope — left to right.
What they do:
They make sure the road isn't tilting sideways. If you're paving a road that's supposed to be 2% slope, the slope sensor keeps it there.
What fails:
They're usually pretty solid — but the mounting can work loose, and they can get knocked off-zero by heavy vibration.
This is where the signals from the sensors get processed. It tells the hydraulic valves how much to move.
What they do:
They take the sensor input and turn it into a command. Some are digital, some are analog. Either way, they're the heart of the system.
What fails:
Electronic boards can fry from power surges or moisture. Older ones sometimes just die from age.
These are hydraulic cylinders attached to the screed. They push and pull the screed up and down based on the control box's commands.
What they do:
They do the actual heavy lifting — moving the screed, which can weigh several tons.
What fails:
Internal seals wear out, causing drift. The cylinder rod can scratch, leading to leaks.
If you're using wire-based sensors, you need the whole kit — wire, clamps, stakes.
What they do:
They provide the reference line for the sensors.
What fails:
Wire stretches. Stakes pull out. Clamps slip. It's not "parts" in the mechanical sense, but a broken stringline stops the job just as fast as a dead sensor.

You don't need a full workshop to take care of the leveling system. A few habits go a long way.
Look at the arms and brackets before you start. If they're bent, straighten or replace them. A bent arm gives false readings from the start.
These are precision parts. Don't blast them with a pressure washer. Use a rag or a brush. For non-contact sensors, keep the face clean — dirt affects the reading.
After you set up, run the paver a few feet. Stop. Check the mat. If it's wavy, stop and fix it. Paving a bad mat for half an hour before noticing means you're going to tear it out.
Don't leave them hanging on the paver where they can get hit by trucks or debris. Pop them off and put them somewhere safe.
Don't let cables drag on the ground or get tangled. Use cable loops or ties. A pulled cable breaks wires inside even if the outside looks fine.
The cylinders have pivot pins. Grease them regularly. If they bind, the cylinder has to work harder and seals wear faster.
The asphalt paver leveling system doesn't get a lot of attention until it fails. But when it fails, it fails loudly — in the form of bad mat quality, failed inspections, and lost time.
Know the parts. Keep spares of the things that break most. And treat the sensors like the precision instruments they are.
